CHILD & FAMILY CENTRE:
ON-COUNTRY
Child and Family Centres are place-based initiatives designed to respond to the complex needs of children and families experiencing vulnerability close to home.
Gong-Dal Aboriginal Corporation has been working with Territory Families, Milindji Corporation, ARDS and Anglicare-NT to plan, design and establish a Gapuwiyak and Homelands Child and Family Centre.
2024 - CO-DESIGN PHASE
In 2024, ARDS facilitated community engagement with all bäpurru (clans) living in Gapuwiyak and surrounding Homelands to ‘co-design’ the CFCOC.
From this Child and Family Centre On Country: Co-Design – bringing our ideas together, a community-driven Yolŋu-led, strengths-based ‘Draft Framework’ has emerged that will underpin the service model.
The draft CFCOC framework maps eight ‘domains’ across each of six service delivery ‘elements’.
Families will become stronger as the following 8 domains become stronger:
Gurruṯu ga Bäpurru (kin and clan)
Djäma ga Gakal (meaningful work and skill)
Raypirri ga Riŋgitj (discipline and knowledge)
Dhuwa/Yirritja (moiety and inclusivity)
Wäŋa mulka (homelands)
Rom (laws and customs)
Dhäruk (language)
Dhäwu-dhawu ga Worruŋu Mulkurr (story- telling and transfer of knowledge)
The 6 identified service design elements) are:
Holistic experiences for Yolŋu families
A fully Yolŋu workforce is empowered
Infrastructure enables (space, materials, technology)
Systems and processes sustain the vision
Partnerships appreciate strength, knowledge and differences
Yolŋu led reflection, learning and celebration of success
The Gapuwiyak and Homelands CFCOC Framework strongly aligns with the Child and Family Centres Operational Guidelines stated outcomes of the NT Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities.
2025 - ESTABLISHMENT PHASE
2025 will be an exciting year for the CFCOC.
Yolngu and Balanda Co-Managers will be employed to develop facilities, programs, projects and resources in Gapuwiyak and Homelands, and to start working with families, other stakeholders and service providers, guided by the CFCOC Framework and CFCOC Leadership Group, which initially comprises Goŋ-Ḏäl and Milindji Directors.
CO-WORKING & ADULT LEARNING SPACE
In 2024, we extended and refurbished an existing donga to create a co-working and adult learning space that includes a shared work area, individual workstations with laptops and monitors, an office area, indoor and outdoor kitchens, and outdoor learning and work area.
Community benefits include the provision of indoor and outdoor working and learning spaces that enable us to develop and run adult learning programs, and training to help address the wide range of adult learning needs in our community, to host meetings, provide personal admin support and co-working spaces for community members.
The ‘Co-Working & Adult Learning Space’ was made possible through the Northern Territory Government ‘Community Benefit Fund’.
